Contemporary Victorian Hairstyles; Inspired by American Horror Story

Step By Step-

• Brush hair through to ensure its free of any knots. 
• Remember, High Lift, Tension, Neat Sectioning. 
• Create a parting that is side center- just a little bit over from center. 
• Heat up suitable curling irons
• Using a pin tale comb- section off the hair in equal amounts
• Create 3 'rolls' going down the side of the head (fringe area) and pin in place to set
• create 2 rolls going down the opposite side of the head and pin to set. 
• REMEMBER TO STOP THE ROLLS IN LINE WITH THE TEMPLE.
• Next, you will start brickwork. At the top of the crown (below the current curls) do ONE Curl and roll and pin into place. 
• Underneath the first brickwork roll, split the next section into two and repeat.
• Underneath the two brickwork, section the next piece of hair and curl, roll and pin (ONE CURL ONLY)
• Carry the one curl, and repeat down the nape of the neck. 
• At the sides of the hair, from below the temple. Use the curlers and curl towards the face and roll and pin. Do this on both sides. Do this with the remaining hair.

Hair Look 1

• Once the whole head is done, take out the grips. 
• Section off the front (5 rolls done first) and secure with a sectioning clip.
• Next, use a wide tooth comb to neaten the brickwork. You can backcomb the hair slightly to improve height and coverage. 
• Using the side curls, begin to roll and tuck inwards, making your way to the back of head. Secure with a pin. Do this with the opposite side.
• using the middle section from the brickwork, roll into the head and secure. 
• Using the front section you secured away, Gently, using you fingers release each curl and loosen. Drape them across the face and onto the hair and secure- this should make an backwards C look.

Hair Look 2

• After Taking the grips out once set, using a paddle brush- brush through the hair gently going underneath and above the hair to ensure it stays neat. 
• Go in the direction you want the hair to fall.
• The hair should look like an oldschool hollywood glamour S wave.

Hair Look 3

• Now the hair has been brushed out by look 2, tip the dolls head upside down and give it a good shake. This will bring the hair back to its original curls and leave it with volume  
• With a model or client, get them to tip their heads upside down, and with your hands give it a rough shake with the hair only- be careful not to hurt your model. 

Evaluation-

I LOVED this practical session! I have found that during this semester my hair skills have really improved which is fantastic. This session was medium intensity for me so I am very proud of how it turned out and also proud with the feedback from Lottie! 

Dark Eyes and Lips

• Ensure the skin is cleansed, toned and moisturized. 
• Prep the eye with a little concealer.
• Starting with a light creme eye shadow (Illamasqua) work into the lid with a brush. 
• Set this with an identical colour in powder form.
• Using a second colour (Kryolan palette) work from the outer corner of the lid into the middle and smoke into the base.
• Using a darker colour (Kryolan Palette- Black) apply to the crease and smoke.
• Using another colour (Kryolan Palette- Purple) and blend from the crease outwards
• Using a highlighter, highlight the brow bone.
• Do suitable eyeliner
• Lashes

• Using desired lip colour (Black and Dark Burgundy Mixed from MAC)
• Take a precision brush and go around the outsides on the lips.
• Using the same colour fill in the lips and blot with tissue
• Apply a little powder and repeat the above sections again. 

Evaluation-

I really enjoyed doing eyes and lips in class with Fenella. 

Eye make up is the one thing within the practical world I really struggle with. 

I am extremely happy with the outcome of my eye make up from this lesson and believe it looks great. I do think I need to work on blending the colour by the brow bone as it looks a little harsh.

I think my lips look OK. I was more concentrating on getting the colour the way I wanted. 

I think I can clean the lines up a bit because its quite smudgy and unneat. 

Creating scars with molds

Step By Step-

• To create a mold ensure you have to have a clean dry mold and spray it with quick release, this enables the product you put into the mold to come out once it has set without any problems.
• You then take some Prozade which will be used to stick on the prosthetic piece. Prozade enables the piece to move unlike Spirit gum. Ensure you have the Prozade remover when using this product. 
• Prozade is a contact adhesive so you MUST apply the product to the prosthetic piece and not straight onto the skin- ensure the Prozade is CLEAR before putting it onto the skin.  
• Once the prosthetic piece is on and is stuck, you need to use a baby bud and witch hazel to soften down the edges. Witch Hazel will remove the entire prosthetic piece so use little product and gently soften down the edges.
• Once you have finished the sticking of the prosthetic piece and the edges have been softened you can use a translucent powder over the top (use a sponge or pad and press down) The powder will ensure the sticky residue from the gelatin does not get on your brushes
• Using fake blood, wound filler and your supra color pallet you can now make/design your wound as needed. 

Evaluation-

I have always enjoyed special effects, the blood and gore is something I find so fun within the make up world but creating this was so frustrating! I got off to a good start, my edges were good and then when I started to color in the wound it finished looking awful. Sue helped me understand how to work the witch hazel in properly to get a good effect and I re colored the wound and added some fake blood and there you had it, it looked great!

I felt that both of my assessments went very well. I am very happy with how my design turned out and I am pleased with my physical portrayal of Miss Havisham. I feel there are more similarities in both my images than there are differences, which is a good thing. The start of the design process for Miss Havisham was difficult and I struggled to create her in different stages but I am pleased with the final outcome.

I don’t think its 100% perfect, which frustrates me a little but I now know what I need to do to ensure it’s a very close match next time. Overall, I am very pleased with the outcome of my Continuity assessment. I believe I did a very good job for my first time even though I found it very challenging ensuring I photographed and noted everything down as well as recreating the look. 

Estella Final

Estella was easier to design for me, an image of beauty mixed with the results of domestic abuse was the obvious choice in designing Estella as I didn't just want to do an average beauty make up, I wanted there to be a focal point. I enjoyed the challenge of creating a hair look, I find challenging to myself due to my lack of skill in that department and I am really pleased with the outcome.

I also think my makeup design and practice look great but I would definitely re think how dark I would do the bruises on the eye and neck, because I do practices at home without a professional camera it’s hard to see how it would turn up with studio lighting so I now know I need to either do test shots OR do dramatic make up darker.

Overall I am very happy with the final outcome! 

Miss Havisham Practice

Evaluation

My last practice before the assessment was great. I was able to fix any problems I had with the design before it was too late. The problem was with the hair. I could not decide whether to leave the plait pony tail down or to put it up in a bun and the bun looked better in the assessment. 

Burns; How to re create them with different products

Burns-

Gelatin and Glycerin 

 

Step By Step-

• Gelatin- Depending on what form of gelatin you use- melt or heat it accordingly.
• I used gelatin in a block form. To heat this up simple add a small quantity into a microwavable bowl and put it in the microwave for 20 seconds and check. Continue to heat up until the desired consistency is achieved. ALWAYS CHECK ON YOUR OWN HAND BEFORE applying to the model.
• Using a spatula apply the gelatin to the area and build up until you are happy.
• work quickly and allow time to dry.
• when the gelatin is nearly dry use the spatula and press and lift to bubble the gelatin up.
• Using powder, powder over to protect your brushes for the next step
• Using blood and supra color apply to the desired areas to create a life like burn.
• Using glycerin apply to the burn to create the appearance of it being pussy and sore.

Evaluation-

I really enjoyed working with Gelatin and Glycerin. Both being natural products available in supermarkets and pharmacies I did not ever think to use these to create special effects but they work amazingly! I think my overall look of the burn looks great, It looks very sore and has the appearance of the skin peeling off. I think my blood/color on the burn could be alot better and blended.

I also would add more glycerin next time and maybe color it with a yellow to make puss.
